Rory McIlroy's toe injury, which caused discomfort last week, forced him to end a PGA Championship practice round early.

Rory McIlroy's pursuit of a second PGA Championship title hit a minor snag on Tuesday when a stubborn toe blister forced him to cut his practice round short at Aronimink Golf Club. The Northern Irishman, who has been battling discomfort under the nail of his right pinky toe since last week's Truist Championship, walked off the course after just three holes.

McIlroy first revealed the issue last week, explaining, "It's underneath my nail, so I can't really get to it. It's a little sore, but I'll be all right." While he initially downplayed the severity, the blister proved troublesome enough that he was seen limping to the third tee and pausing in the middle of the fairway to remove his shoe. By the fourth tee box, he had decided to call it a day, hopping on a cart and heading back to the clubhouse.

According to ESPN's Jeff Darlington, McIlroy spent the afternoon trying on different pairs of shoes, suggesting he's exploring all options to alleviate the pressure on the affected area. For a player known for his explosive power and fluid swing, even a minor foot issue can disrupt rhythm and balance—something no golfer wants heading into a major championship.

This is a familiar challenge for elite athletes: managing small injuries before they become big problems. McIlroy's decision to end the practice round early appears to be a smart, precautionary move. With first-round tee time set for Thursday at 8:40 a.m. ET alongside Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth, he's giving himself every chance to be fully ready when it counts. After all, the PGA Championship is a marathon, not a sprint—and sometimes the smartest play is knowing when to take a break.

Golf fans can expect McIlroy to be in the field Thursday, likely with fresh footwear and a renewed focus on adding another Wanamaker Trophy to his collection.
