Rory McIlroy admits he was 'wrong' about LIV Golf, saying players were 'blind-sided' by PIF pulling its funding.

Rory McIlroy is known for speaking his mind, and this week at the PGA Championship, he did just that—admitting he was wrong about LIV Golf and its impact on the sport.

"I can admit when I'm wrong, and that was one that I did get wrong," McIlroy said Tuesday ahead of the 108th PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The four-time major champion's change of heart comes after months of uncertainty in professional golf. Following the Framework Agreement signed in June 2023, McIlroy believed the best path forward was for the PGA Tour to accept funding from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) and bring LIV Golf into the fold. He even went as far as saying "it should and will be done."

But negotiations between PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and PGA Tour leadership hit a wall. Talks broke off last year, leaving both sides bracing for a prolonged standoff. Then came the bombshell: PIF announced last month it would pull its funding of LIV Golf at the end of the year, leaving the breakaway league in a precarious spot.

For McIlroy, who was initially one of LIV's most vocal critics before softening his stance, the development is a stark reminder of how quickly things can change in the world of golf. He now acknowledges that players were blindsided by the sudden shift in funding, and the future of the sport remains uncertain.

As the PGA Championship gets underway, all eyes will be on McIlroy—not just for his game, but for his evolving perspective on a saga that has reshaped professional golf.
