Former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney believes the video assistant referee "did a really good job" in disallowing West Ham's late equaliser against Arsenal.

In a thrilling Premier League clash that had major implications for both the title race and the relegation battle, Wayne Rooney has praised the video assistant referee for making what he calls a "really good" call in Arsenal's narrow 1-0 victory over West Ham.

The drama unfolded in stoppage time when West Ham's Callum Wilson appeared to have scored a crucial equalizer, one that would have dealt a serious blow to Arsenal's title hopes while giving the Hammers a massive boost in their fight against relegation. However, the goal was swiftly disallowed after a VAR review determined that West Ham's Pablo had fouled Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in the buildup.

Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Show, the former England and Manchester United striker didn't hesitate to back the officials. "It's a clear foul," Rooney stated emphatically. "You can clearly see the arm crosses his face and it impacts him getting to the ball. So I think it's the right decision."

Rooney acknowledged the inevitable controversy that would follow, noting that Manchester City fans and players would likely argue the goal should have stood, while Tottenham supporters—given their own relegation concerns—would side with the decision. "But it's a clear foul," he reiterated. "It's the one time I actually think VAR has done a really good job in such an important game."

The result sends Arsenal five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table, strengthening their grip on the Premier League title. For West Ham, the defeat leaves them in 18th place, just a point behind Tottenham as the battle to avoid relegation intensifies.

While satisfied with the VAR intervention, Rooney didn't miss the opportunity to voice his long-standing frustration with the protection afforded to goalkeepers inside their own area. "I think where VAR is consistent and the referees are consistent—and I hate it—is you go anywhere near the goalkeeper and it's a foul," he said. "Throughout my career as a player, I've had a dislike for goalkeepers because of that reason."
