The Buffalo Bills may have landed one of the biggest steals of the 2026 NFL Draft when they selected safety Jalon Kilgore with the 167th overall pick in the fifth round. The former University of South Carolina standout is already turning heads at Bills camp, showcasing the versatility, athleticism, and physicality that made him a standout in the SEC. Now wearing No. 29, Kilgore is eager to make his mark in Buffalo's secondary.
Kilgore arrives with an impressive college résumé, having started 33 games for the Gamecocks. During his time at South Carolina, he racked up 178 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, 21 passes defended, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble. His production and leadership earned him second-team All-SEC honors in 2025, after he was named a team captain. Before that breakout campaign, Kilgore had already established himself as one of the conference's rising defensive backs, earning Freshman All-America and Freshman All-SEC honors in 2023.
What truly sets Kilgore apart is his versatility. At 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, he has the ideal size for a modern NFL safety, paired with elite athletic traits. At the NFL Combine, he ran a blistering 4.4-second 40-yard dash and posted a 37-inch vertical jump, showcasing the explosiveness that caught Buffalo's attention. Throughout his college career, Kilgore lined up at multiple positions, giving new Bills defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard plenty of options. He played both safety spots, frequently operated in the nickel, and proved capable of covering tight ends while also supporting the run as a slot defender.
That flexibility could make Kilgore a valuable chess piece in Buffalo's defense. While he projects primarily as a box safety, his ability to slide into the slot creates matchup advantages against versatile offenses. More importantly, Kilgore consistently showed strong instincts and a knack for finding the football. The Bills also moved quickly to secure their rookie defender financially, signing him to a four-year rookie contract that includes a signing bonus of $350,868. With a cap hit of just over $1 million in 2026, Kilgore represents both an immediate value and a long-term investment for a team looking to bolster its secondary.
As training camp continues, all eyes will be on how the rookie adapts to the speed of the NFL game. But if his early performances are any indication, the Bills may have found a gem in the fifth round—a player whose versatility and drive could make him a key contributor from day one.
