The Kansas City Current are locking in their future on the backline. Rookie defender Laney Rouse has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep her with the club through the 2028 season, with a club option for 2029. The move comes as a strong vote of confidence for the young player, who originally joined the Current on a one-year deal after wrapping up her collegiate career at the University of Virginia.

For Rouse, the decision to stay in Kansas City was an easy one. "I’m extremely happy to be able to continue my career with the Kansas City Current," she said. "I’m excited to keep competing with a club that’s competitive, ambitious and always pushing for more. The mentality here, from the players to the staff, motivates you to improve every day and strive to be your best. It’s an honor to represent this club, and I will keep giving my all to this team and community."

Rouse has already made her mark in the NWSL, making her professional debut against the Seattle Reign on March 25. Since then, she has appeared in four matches, including three starts—a solid start for any rookie acclimating to the top level of women's soccer in the United States. Her ability to step in and contribute early has been a bright spot for the Current's defense.

General manager Ryan Dell praised Rouse's immediate impact and growth. "Laney has made an immediate impact on our club over these past few months with her positive attitude and unrelenting work ethic," Dell said. "She has bought into our system from day one. Her desire to learn and grow does not go unnoticed and she has already made great strides in her development. Laney’s future is bright, and we’re thrilled she will continue to call Kansas City home."

As the Current continue to build a competitive roster, securing young talent like Rouse ensures the team remains a force in the NWSL for years to come. For fans, this extension is a sign that the club is investing in players who embody the grit and ambition that define Kansas City soccer.
