CHICAGO — Tony Medlin first mentioned it to new Chicago Bears center Logan Jones. There's a new number in town for the Chicago Bears, and it carries some serious Hall of Fame weight. Rookie center Logan Jones has decided to wear No. 54, making him the first Bears player to sport the jersey since legendary linebacker Brian Urlacher hung up his cleats after the 2012 season.

The story starts in the locker room, where equipment director Tony Medlin—a Bears fixture since 1987 and head equipment manager since 1997—first floated the idea to Jones. "He was kind of joking about it with me," Jones recalled. "He's been here such a long time. He's like, 'I think it would be really cool.'" And cool it is, considering the number belongs to a first-ballot Hall of Famer and one of the most iconic players in franchise history.

For Jones, a second-round pick (57th overall) in last month's draft, this isn't just about digits on a jersey. It's about honoring a legacy that defines the Bears. "When you think of the Chicago Bears, that's kind of who you think of," Jones said. "To see that number out in practice, it just lets everybody think, 'Oh, that's Brian Urlacher's number.'" Urlacher's No. 54 remains a fan favorite at Soldier Field, with jerseys still filling the stands on game days.

But why has the number been available for over a decade? The answer lies in the Bears' rich history. The franchise already has a league-record 14 retired numbers, including legends like Mike Ditka (No. 89), whose jersey was retired in 2013—the last time the Bears honored a player that way. Team Chairman George McCaskey has since indicated that Ditka's number would be the final retirement, leaving players like Urlacher's No. 54 still in circulation.

That's a practical necessity, too. With 14 numbers off-limits, the Bears often scramble to outfit their 90-man training camp roster, sometimes requiring players to share numbers during the preseason. While the regular season eases that crunch, every available number counts. For Jones, stepping into No. 54 means carrying a torch that's been waiting for a new bearer—and honoring a Bears icon every time he takes the field.
