The pair of women's pioneers in MMA are set to clash in the main event on Saturday night in Los Angeles

Two pioneers of women's MMA are finally set to settle a long-debated "what if" matchup this Saturday night in Los Angeles. Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano, both trailblazers who helped pave the way for women in combat sports, will headline MVP MMA's debut event—a rare high-profile American mixed martial arts card not under the UFC banner.

For Carano, this fight marks an incredible return to the cage after 16 years away. The 44-year-old was a dominant force in Strikeforce and Elite XC during the mid-to-late 2000s, winning her first seven professional fights before meeting Cris Cyborg in a legendary 2009 superfight that ended in a first-round TKO loss. Carano hasn't competed since, instead pursuing Hollywood roles—though her acting career hit a major roadblock after controversial social media comments led to her departure from the hit Star Wars series "The Mandalorian."

In many ways, Carano wrote the blueprint that Rousey would later perfect. While Carano brought mainstream attention to women's MMA, Rousey exploded onto the scene with an intensity that changed the sport forever. An Olympic bronze medalist in judo from the 2008 Games, Rousey wasted no time making her mark. Her first six professional fights all ended in the first round, with five of those victories coming in under one minute. That dominance caught the eye of UFC CEO Dana White, who famously reversed his long-standing opposition to women fighting in the promotion specifically because of Rousey's star power.

Rousey's UFC run was nothing short of spectacular—six consecutive wins, with only Miesha Tate managing to survive past the first round. Three of those victories ended in less than a minute, cementing her reputation as one of the most dangerous fighters in the sport's history.

But every champion's reign has its turning point. In 2015, Rousey suffered a stunning upset loss to Holly Holm, who outclassed her on the feet before landing a devastating head kick. A 48-second TKO loss to Amanda Nunes followed the next year, and Rousey stepped away from competition. Like Carano, her time in the spotlight was marked by both massive popularity and headline-generating missteps—including a 2013 social media video that drew widespread criticism.

Now, both women step back into the cage with legacies already secured. Saturday's main event isn't just a fight—it's a celebration of two athletes who changed the face of MMA forever.
