Romeo Doubs is just two months into his Patriots tenure, but the wide receiver is already feeling right at home in New England. After signing a four-year, $68 million deal on the second day of free agency back in March, Doubs has been diving headfirst into his new surroundings—and he couldn't be happier about it.
"I love it here," Doubs said after his first on-field work with the team during the voluntary offseason program. "The adjustment feels right on time in terms of coming into a new system, being under a great offensive coordinator in Josh McDaniels, and Coach Vrabel. Just football stuff, man."
The 26-year-old's commitment to learning was evident from day one. According to executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf, Doubs was so eager to get started that he had to set down the team-issued iPad—already loaded with the offensive playbook—before he even signed his contract.
Transitioning from Green Bay's West Coast offense to McDaniels' system hasn't been without its challenges. Doubs acknowledged the language is "very different," but he's adapting quickly to the concepts and nuances. Credit also goes to his new teammates, who've made the adjustment smoother.
"I have the right people around me," Doubs said. "I have Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and even Efton Chism—those dudes have been guiding me, showing me the way this system works. I'm blessed to be around those dudes."
Doubs is coming off a career-best season with the Packers, hauling in 55 receptions for 724 yards and following it up with an impressive eight-catch, 124-yard performance in Green Bay's Wild Card loss. Now, with a clearer understanding of his role in McDaniels' offense, the talented receiver believes he has even more to offer.
"Just being around him, being in this system, understanding it so far, I can already see how he thinks offensively. It's a completely different mindset," Doubs explained. "As a player, you need that—different game plans, different perspectives, different concepts, different ways to run routes. It's something special."
