In a concerning turn of events for the Boston Red Sox, top outfield prospect Roman Anthony was forced to exit Monday's game against the Detroit Tigers after just one at-bat, with the team later citing "right wrist discomfort" as the cause.
The incident unfolded in the top of the first inning when Anthony, on a check swing, fouled off a pitch from Tigers' left-hander Tyler Holton. The 21-year-old immediately began flexing his right hand, prompting interim manager Chad Tracy and head athletic trainer Brandon Henry to rush to the plate. After a brief consultation and a few practice swings, Anthony bravely remained in the contest, grounding into a fielder's choice two pitches later. He managed to run the bases and even took the field for the bottom of the first inning, but was replaced by Masataka Yoshida in left field before the second frame began.
This latest setback is yet another chapter in what has been a frustrating debut season for Anthony, who turns 22 on May 13. Entering Monday's action, the highly-touted prospect was hitting just .231 with one home run, five doubles, five RBIs, and a .681 OPS across 29 games. The Red Sox had given him the start in left field, with Jarren Duran serving as the designated hitter.
Unfortunately, injuries have plagued Anthony since his big league debut on June 9. His rookie campaign was cut short on September 2 when a Grade 2 oblique strain sidelined him for the final month of the regular season and the entire postseason. Earlier this year, he also missed four games due to an upper back issue. Prior to Monday's game, Anthony had shown signs of life at the plate, going 7-for-28 (.250) with two doubles in seven games since returning from that back injury.
For Red Sox fans eager to see the future of their outfield, this wrist issue is a worrisome development. With Anthony's immense talent and potential, the team will surely be cautious, hoping this is just a minor bump in the road for a player who represents a key piece of Boston's long-term plans.
