Change is in the air at Wrexham as the club prepares for a summer of transition. Veteran striker Jay Rodriguez and midfielder Andy Cannon headline a list of six players who will depart the Racecourse Ground when their contracts expire this season.
Rodriguez, who turns 37 in July and earned a single England cap during his storied career, arrived at Wrexham from Burnley just over 15 months ago. The former Premier League forward played a role in Phil Parkinson's side securing promotion to the Championship in 2024-25, scoring twice in 17 League One appearances. However, a persistent ankle injury limited him to just seven substitute outings in his one full season with the club, and he missed the early months of the campaign entirely.
Cannon, 30, joined Wrexham from Hull City in December 2022 and became a key figure in the club's remarkable rise. He scored 10 goals in 86 appearances and was part of the squad that won three consecutive promotions under Parkinson. But his time in North Wales was cut short by a serious knee injury suffered in February 2025. After returning to fitness last November, he completed a loan move to Burton Albion in January, where he made 17 appearances for the League One side.
Alongside the experienced duo, youngsters Reuben Egan, Callum Edwards, Tom Kelly, and Max Purvis will also leave the club. Wrexham expressed their gratitude in a statement: "They are released with the club's sincere thanks for their efforts and contributions during their time at the football club."
While the departure list is lengthy, there is positive news for the future. Young defender Aaron James has had his contract extended until the summer of 2027 after the club exercised an option. The 20-year-old academy product has made nine senior appearances, scoring once, though his 2025-26 campaign featured only a single League Cup outing. Midfielder Alex Moore and forward Rio Owen have also signed contract extensions, signaling Wrexham's commitment to developing homegrown talent.
For those leaving, the path to the first team proved elusive. Goalkeeper Egan, 20, departs without a senior appearance since signing as a free agent last September, while winger Edwards, wing-back Kelly, and defender Purvis also failed to break through.
As Wrexham prepares for life in the Championship, these moves mark the end of an era for some and the beginning of new opportunities for others. The club's summer business will be closely watched by fans eager to see how Parkinson reshapes his squad for the challenges ahead.
