The Colorado Rockies have been busy making roster moves just in time for their "Rivalry Weekend" series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Coors Field. Headlining the action is the call-up of top prospect Sterlin Thompson (No. 13 PuRP), who is set to make his Major League debut after being recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Thompson, 24, was drafted 31st overall by the Rockies in the 2022 MLB draft out of the University of Florida. The former Gator showcased his versatility during his college career, hitting an impressive .332/.424/.524 over two seasons while splitting time between right field and second base. Since joining the Rockies organization, he has been moved around the diamond—seeing time at first and third base—but has settled into a corner outfield role over the past two seasons.
Last year, Thompson spent the entire season at Triple-A, where he put up standout numbers: .296/.392/.519 in 120 games, with 28 doubles, eight triples, and 18 home runs. The Rockies added him to the 40-man roster this offseason to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.
Spring training was a bit rocky for Thompson, as he managed just a .270 OPS with only one hit in 19 at-bats. But since being assigned back to Albuquerque to start the season, he has been on fire. Through his first 36 games, Thompson is hitting .344/.491/.496 with five doubles, one triple, four home runs, and eight stolen bases. Even more impressive, he has drawn 30 walks while striking out just 28 times—a sign of strong plate discipline.
Born in Longmont, Colorado, Thompson will become the first Colorado native position player to debut with the Rockies when he takes the field. While he's not in tonight's starting lineup, fans can expect to see the local product make his mark soon.
In a corresponding move, utilityman Tyler Freeman has been placed on the paternity list. Meanwhile, the Rockies have also placed right-handed pitcher Chase Dollander on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow sprain. Dollander, 24, had been off to a strong start this season, posting a 3.89 ERA with 47 strikeouts over 10 appearances. He originally worked out of the bullpen as a bulk reliever—often following an opener—but had made his last few starts.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Rockies navigate this flurry of roster changes and welcome their newest star!
