Cristian Torres is getting the chance to ride in his first Kentucky Derby after Kenny McPeek-trained Right to Party was scratched on Friday, with Doug O'Neill's Robusta drawing into the field. The jockey looked to be out of luck after Silent Tactic was ruled out earlier this week because of a foot injury. Trainer Mark Casse said it was an easy decision in the best interests of the horse but that he felt badly for Torres.

The Kentucky Derby is all about second chances, and this year, jockey Cristian Torres is living proof. After being left without a mount when Silent Tactic was scratched earlier this week due to a foot injury, Torres thought his Derby dreams were dashed. But in a dramatic twist on Friday, Doug O'Neill's Robusta drew into the field following the late scratch of Kenny McPeek-trained Right to Party.

Torres, who will now ride in his first Kentucky Derby, got the call when O'Neill needed a jockey for Robusta—Emisael Jaramillo was already committed to ride at Santa Anita Park in California on Saturday. It's a heartwarming turn of events for the young jockey, who had been preparing for a long Derby weekend on the sidelines.

Trainer Mark Casse, who scratched Right to Party, said the decision was made in the best interest of the horse, though he admitted feeling badly for Torres. "It's never easy to pull a horse from the Derby, but we have to do what's right for the animal," Casse explained.

Robusta now holds the final spot in the 20-horse field, meaning any additional scratches would shrink the lineup for the opening leg of the Triple Crown. The Derby has already seen its share of withdrawals: in addition to Right to Party and Silent Tactic, Brad Cox's Fulleffort was also scratched after an X-ray revealed a chip and fluid in the colt's left hind ankle.

For Torres, the rollercoaster week has ended on a high note. From being out of luck to stepping into the starting gate at Churchill Downs, his Derby story is one of resilience—and a reminder that in horse racing, you never know when opportunity will knock.
