Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough has described the re-signing of forward Tyler Roberts as a "big boost" for the Stags, as the club now turns its attention to securing a deal for Jamaica international Jon Russell.
Roberts, 27, has committed to a new one-year contract at the One Call Stadium, making his loan move from Birmingham City permanent after initially joining on a short-term agreement in February. The Wales international, who was playing Premier League football for Leeds United just four years ago, managed four goals and two assists in 19 League One appearances last season despite an injury-hit campaign.
"He sets the bar now for the sort of player that we are trying to bring in," Clough told BBC Radio Nottingham. "A couple of years ago if you said you will sign an ex-Premier League player like Tyler Roberts, he is not 35 or 36, he is just a very good player at a good age."
"It's a very important signing. By his own admission, he wasn't on the pitch as much as we would have liked but when he did get on the pitch he had a huge influence. Tyler is a big boost straight away and if we can get Jon, that will be another one."
The Stags are now working to bring midfielder Russell back to the club after his successful loan spell from Barnsley in January. The 25-year-old, a former Chelsea youth team product, scored five goals in 21 league appearances for Mansfield and became a free agent following the expiration of his Tykes deal.
"We are doing everything we can to secure Jon, and will continue to do that," Clough added. "We are getting down the line with it and we are not far away now, which is good."
