Rob Havenstein remembers some compliments he received while playing more than others

Rob Havenstein, the newly retired Los Angeles Rams offensive lineman, recently shared a memorable compliment that stands out above the rest—and it's a testament to what makes a great offensive line truly special.

During an appearance on Bleav in Rams with Erin Coscarelli and Brian Baldinger, Havenstein recalled a moment after a game when an opposing defensive player approached him. Instead of naming a single standout lineman, the opponent offered a simple yet powerful observation: "I'm not sure which one of you guys is good, but you all played well together."

For Havenstein, that comment wasn't just a compliment—it was validation of everything the Rams' offensive line strives for. In a sport where individual accolades often steal the spotlight, Havenstein and his teammates take greater pride in team success. The goal? Take five separate players and forge them into one cohesive unit. Every team talks about playing as one, but not every team pulls it off.

According to Havenstein, the Rams have consistently achieved this chemistry, regardless of which five linemen are on the field on any given Sunday. He credits the athletes themselves, but also gives props to the organization for identifying the right players and providing top-notch coaching under head coach Sean McVay.

"I think one of the great compliments we ever got was... I wanna say it was still that 2018 season," Havenstein recalled. "I think we were playing the Niners or something... one of the defensive ends, defensive tackles basically said, 'I'm not sure which one of you guys is good, but you all played well together.' For him to actually say that to us after the game... it was one of the best compliments that we've ever gotten. We take pride in communicating with each other. That comes from guys caring, and that's something the Rams have done very well."

Of course, you could argue that the opposing player's inability to single out one "good" lineman might be a subtle dig. But for Havenstein, the message was clear: the unit worked as one, and that's the part he remembers to this day. In a league where offensive lines are often measured by their ability to protect the quarterback and open running lanes, playing together might just be the highest praise of all.

For any football fan—or anyone who appreciates the unsung heroes in the trenches—Havenstein's reflection is a reminder that the best teams don't just have great players. They have players who make each other better. And that's a lesson worth wearing on your sleeve.
