Ohio State coach Ryan Day will have a new Big Ten rival beginning in 2027 – his son.

In a twist that adds a personal touch to Big Ten rivalries, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day will soon be facing off against a familiar name on the opposing sideline—his own son. RJ Day, a three-star quarterback prospect from DeSales High School in the class of 2027, has officially committed to Northwestern University.

The younger Day announced his decision on May 10 via his X account, writing, "Super excited to announce my commitment to further my football and academic career at Northwestern University!!" He also thanked his family and the DeSales coaching staff for their support. The Wildcats' offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly, a former Ohio State offensive coordinator, played a key role in securing the commitment after offering Day a scholarship on April 29.

For Ryan Day, this means a unique family showdown on the horizon. Ohio State is scheduled to visit Northwestern in 2027, with the Buckeyes hosting the Wildcats on November 14 that same year. It's a rivalry game that will now carry extra emotional weight.

RJ Day enters his senior season at DeSales with impressive credentials. Standing 5-foot-11 and weighing 203 pounds, he already holds the program's career records for passing yards (5,714) and touchdowns (54). Last fall, he set single-season records with 2,710 yards and 25 touchdowns, earning first-team all-district and second-team all-state honors in Division II as the Stallions finished 9-3.

According to 247Sports, Day received 18 college offers, including from Cincinnati, Purdue, and South Florida—the latter coached by former Ohio State assistant Brian Hartline. His commitment to Northwestern not only strengthens the Wildcats' future quarterback room but also sets the stage for a compelling family narrative in the Big Ten.
