Riyan Parag vape row: Ravichandran Ashwin says 'this could have been avoided'

Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag was fined and received a demerit point for vaping in the dressing room during an IPL match. The incident drew criticism, with former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin advising Parag to maintain personal space for his actions due to his leadership role.

Riyan Parag finds himself at the center of a brewing controversy after the Rajasthan Royals captain was caught vaping in the dressing room during an IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings. The incident, which unfolded in Mullanpur, has sparked widespread debate about the responsibilities of young leaders in professional cricket.

The 24-year-old was hit with a 25 percent fine on his match fee and handed one demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct. But the fallout goes beyond the penalty box—it's a lesson in leadership and public perception.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin didn't hold back in his assessment. "This is totally a situation that could have been avoided," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. "I don't really want that for a young player, and this is a little sensitive, too."

Ashwin, known for his sharp cricketing mind, offered some elder-brotherly advice to Parag. "It's a personal choice, but your personal choice should be in your personal space. If you do all this in public space, that can very well be avoided." He emphasized the weight of the captain's armband: "You are a captain, you are a franchise leader. You are probably an inspiration for many cricketers, many youth, many young Indians, and young people around the world. So there is some responsibility too."

The veteran spinner expressed empathy for the young cricketer but stressed the need for better judgment. "I have my deepest empathy and sympathy for the young kid, but at the same time, I totally believe all these things should and can be avoided. It can't be easy, man. In today's world, I also sometimes read things and think, man, I mean, sometimes this happens."

For a player who has been tipped as one of Indian cricket's brightest prospects, this serves as a reminder that the spotlight doesn't dim when you step off the field. Whether you're wearing the Royals' pink or just your everyday gear, the choices you make—on and off the pitch—define your legacy.
