The Wolverines are stacking elite talent in the 2027 class, and their latest addition is a game-changer. Xavier Muhammad, a four-star defensive lineman from South Houston, Texas, has officially committed to Michigan, choosing the Maize and Blue over a loaded list of contenders including Notre Dame, Houston, Miami, and TCU.
Ranked as the No. 102 overall prospect and the No. 10 defensive lineman in the nation by the Rivals Industry Ranking, Muhammad is a force to be reckoned with. At 6-foot-3 and 265 pounds, he brings both size and explosive power to the trenches. He’s also the No. 12 player in the talent-rich state of Texas, underscoring just how big of a win this is for the Wolverines.
Muhammad’s recruitment took a decisive turn after his first visit to Ann Arbor last month. The Big Ten powerhouse instantly shot to the top of his list, and just weeks later, he’s locked in. "The college town atmosphere with the student body, the coaching staff, and the interaction with the players really stood out," Muhammad told Rivals. "Also, the resources that are available to help you achieve on and off the field."
This commitment is part of a scorching-hot stretch for Michigan’s new staff, now led by Kyle Whittingham. Muhammad is the fourth blue-chip prospect to pledge to the Wolverines this month alone, rapidly building a formidable foundation for the 2027 class. The class currently sits at No. 12 nationally in the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings, and the momentum shows no signs of slowing down.
Just days earlier, Chicago Mount Carmel four-star wide receiver Quentin Burrell also committed to Michigan live on the Rivals YouTube channel. Burrell, the No. 85 overall prospect and No. 16 receiver in the nation, echoed the sentiment that Michigan’s culture is what sealed the deal. "Michigan felt right because I know it will push me to be my best on and off the field," Burrell said. "The culture and the people around the program stood out from day one."
The Wolverines’ recruiting surge began on May 2 with a pledge from Kalamazoo Loy Norrix four-star offensive tackle Jakari Lipsey (No. 104 overall, No. 9 OT), followed a week later by Indianapolis Franklin Central four-star talent. Now, with Muhammad in the fold, Michigan is proving that its championship pedigree extends well beyond the current roster—it’s building the next generation of stars.
