When the dust settled on New Mexico's toughest baseball district, one team stood alone at the top. The Rio Rancho Rams, after a grueling five-week battle through District 1-5A, earned the No. 1 overall seed in the Class 5A state tournament, as announced Sunday by the New Mexico Activities Association.
The Rams headline a stacked bracket that features Cleveland at No. 2, La Cueva at No. 3, and Piedra Vista at No. 4. The top eight seeds—rounded out by Centennial, Carlsbad, Eldorado, and Mayfield—will all enjoy the home-field advantage of hosting best-of-3 first-round series next weekend.
For traveling teams, the road could have been worse. Rio Grande heads to Eldorado, while defending state champion Sandia (13-13 this season) faces a tough trip to Cleveland. Centennial draws Las Cruces, and Atrisco Heritage, the final team to qualify, gets the unenviable task of visiting top-seeded Rio Rancho.
The playoff bubble saw some intense drama. Sandia, Cibola, and Atrisco Heritage were deemed identical by the NMAA's seeding criteria, but Atrisco's 15-5 head-to-head win over Cibola in late March proved decisive. Ironically, that Cibola loss came just three days after the Cougars stunned La Cueva. Cibola had knocked off four of the top seven seeds—Cleveland, Piedra Vista, and Eldorado among them—but that one defeat to Atrisco kept them out of the field, according to NMAA executive director Dusty Young.
In other first-round action, La Cueva hosts No. 14 Hobbs, while District 5 champion Los Lunas travels to Mayfield. Notably, Volcano Vista missed the 5A bracket for what is believed to be the first time in program history.
Over in Class 4A, defending champion Artesia claimed the No. 1 seed after winning a three-game series against Goddard, who settled for the No. 2 spot. Albuquerque Academy (No. 5) and Hope Christian (No. 6) earned hosting rights over Los Alamos and Belen, respectively. Key matchups include Lovington at Artesia and ninth-seeded St. Pius at No. 8 Grants—the Sartans dropped both games to the Pirates in District 5-4A play. Valley, despite a 9-17 record against a demanding schedule, squeezed in as the No. 14 seed.
In Class 3A, one-loss East Mountain is the clear top seed, while Sandia Prep opens at home against Hot Springs as the No. 5 seed. Eunice takes the No. 1 spot in 2A, with Oak Grove Classical following close behind.
