Rio Ferdinand has thrown his weight behind a rising midfield talent, urging Manchester United to beat rivals Liverpool to the signature of AZ Alkmaar's Kees Smit. The 20-year-old Dutchman is quickly emerging as one of the most intriguing prospects ahead of the summer transfer window, with his blend of technical skill and tactical awareness catching the eye of top clubs across Europe.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Manchester United defender named Smit as a potential long-term replacement for Casemiro, who is expected to depart Old Trafford this summer. "There's a kid called Kees Smit who I absolutely love," Ferdinand said. "He's at Alkmaar. Not many people listening probably know him, but go and check this kid out. He's a Dutch kid, midfielder. He wouldn't be one I'd buy to go in and start immediately because he's too young and inexperienced. But definitely I wouldn't want to miss out on him because I think you need to get two or three in that area."

Ferdinand's assessment frames Smit as a future-focused signing rather than an instant fix. That's a crucial distinction for any club looking to rebuild their midfield over multiple windows. For Liverpool, who have been linked with the youngster under Arne Slot, the need for more legs, control, and defensive awareness in the engine room remains pressing. Stephen Warnock recently argued that the Reds require a holding midfielder who can "sense danger" and bring physicality to the role.

Smit's numbers this season paint a promising picture. In 26 Eredivisie appearances, he has notched three goals and three assists, while boasting an impressive 88% pass accuracy and averaging 5.1 ball recoveries per game, according to Sofascore. His ability to operate as both a defensive six and a box-to-box eight offers versatility that would suit a squad potentially losing Wataru Endo this summer.

With Arsenal, Liverpool, and Real Madrid reportedly circling, according to Christian Falk, the race for Smit is heating up. For fans tracking the next wave of midfield talent, this is a name to keep firmly on the radar.
