The NHL suspended Greig for two games after his third-man-in uppercut on Sean Walker during a game last week.

In a move that has sparked plenty of debate around the hockey world, Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig will sit out the first two games of the 2026-27 NHL season after receiving a suspension for a controversial punch thrown in the team's season finale.

The incident occurred during Game 4 of Ottawa's first-round playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes. With tempers flaring and a full-line scrum underway, Greig delivered a sneaky uppercut to Hurricanes defenseman Sean Walker—a shot that caught Walker completely off guard while he was locked up with another Senators player.

The timing couldn't have been worse for Ottawa. The Senators lost that game 4-2, getting swept out of the playoffs in heartbreaking fashion. Now, Greig will have to wait until five months later to serve his punishment, which includes forfeiting pay for those two regular-season games.

While hockey fans are no strangers to scrums and the occasional stray punch, most agreed this one crossed the line. Even Greig seemed to acknowledge he went too far. "I could do a better job of controlling my emotions," he admitted during Ottawa's exit meetings. "Yeah, that's all I'll say on it."

Some speculated that Greig might have been retaliating for being jumped by multiple Hurricanes players earlier in the game, following a play where Carolina's Eric Robinson shoved him into goalie Freddy Andersen. But Greig clarified that Walker hadn't done anything specific to warrant the punch.

The NHL's Department of Player Safety made their reasoning clear in the suspension announcement: "This is not a situation in which two players are squaring off in a mutual confrontation. Walker is fully engaged with a Senators player when Greig knowingly approaches and throws two sucker punches towards the defenseless Walker with sufficient force to merit supplemental discipline."

For fans looking to gear up for next season, this serves as a reminder that even the most intense playoff moments have their limits. Whether you're hitting the ice or just watching from the stands, keeping your cool is always part of the game.
