Richard Hughes must be rubbing his eyes in disbelief. After Liverpool splashed nearly £200 million on their frontline last summer, the dream attacking rebuild has hit some serious snags.

Hugo Ekitike arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt for £69 million and looked like an instant bargain—bagging 17 goals in his debut season. But then came the gut punch: a long-term injury that could sideline the 23-year-old for up to a year.

Then there's Alexander Isak. Liverpool broke the British transfer record to bring him in from Newcastle for £125 million, sending Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz the other way. But the Swedish star has been plagued by bad luck, suffering a broken leg in December. At 26, we're still waiting to see the best of him—and his injury record raises serious questions about relying on him as the only senior striker available heading into the 2026/27 season.

That's why the transfer rumor mill is already spinning for a new frontman. Reports suggest sporting director Richard Hughes will only consider bargain deals or loan moves, with other squad priorities also demanding attention.

Enter Serhou Guirassy. The Borussia Dortmund striker looks set to leave Signal Iduna Park this summer, and he comes with a tantalizing release clause: just €35 million (£30 million) for a select group of elite clubs. Liverpool have been linked for a while, and it's easy to see why.

The Guinea international just turned 30, but he remains one of Europe's most lethal finishers. This season alone, he's scored 20 goals across all competitions for the Black and Yellows, including 15 in the Bundesliga. Under contract until 2028, he's proven he can deliver at the highest level.

Liverpool don't typically splash out on players in this age bracket, but for Guirassy, they should make an exception. With the injury woes haunting their current strike force, a proven, affordable goal-scorer could be exactly what the Reds need to get back on track.
