At 41 years old, LeBron James is gearing up for another postseason battle, this time as an underdog with the Los Angeles Lakers. But his agent, Rich Paul, is already bracing for the fallout—not just from the game itself, but from the critics who seem eager to see James stumble. With the Lakers facing the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round, and star teammate Luka Dončić expected to miss most of the series, the odds are stacked against them. James turned back the clock with an electric first-round performance against Houston, but the Thunder remain heavy favorites to advance.

On the latest episode of the Game Over podcast, Paul drew a sharp contrast between how the media and fellow players react to James versus other superstars, like the recently eliminated Nikola Jokić. "The reason why you don't hear a lot of conversation about Jokić is I don't believe a lot of people are happy to see Jokić lose," Paul explained. "But when LeBron loses, people are happy to see him lose. Especially his peers. Guys who played in the league, that have platforms today. For different reasons, it's extra. They are happy to see him lose."

Paul acknowledged that every star athlete should expect some critique, but he argued that the negativity aimed at James often crosses into territory driven by personal agendas. "Some players, I see the extra sauce," he said. "I just think that in our community, it makes you feel better when someone else has a thing of detriment placed upon them because of what you lack and what you always wanted."

The Klutch Sports founder revealed that this animosity has real-world consequences for his agency. "I feel the effects of it, because I've had NBA current players, and former players, involve themselves in a recruiting process with a kid — it's not their son — and purposely push a kid to a different agency because of their disdain for LeBron, and I'm his guy," Paul said. In other words, the resentment some players hold toward James is so intense that it's costing Klutch potential young clients before they even enter the league.

As the Lakers prepare for a tough playoff road, Paul's comments shine a light on a deeper dynamic: the off-court battles that come with being tied to one of the most polarizing figures in sports history. For fans and aspiring athletes alike, it's a reminder that loyalty and legacy often come with a price.
