Rory McIlroy hasn’t had the ideal preparation for the PGA Championship, which takes place this week at Aronimink Golf Club. McIlroy has already won the major championship twice in his glittering career, lifting the trophy in 2012 and 2014.

Rory McIlroy's bid for a third PGA Championship title faces an unexpected hurdle this week at Aronimink Golf Club—and it's not the competition. The four-time major winner, who dazzled the golf world with his Masters victory just last month, has been battling a blister on his toe that's threatening to derail his preparation for the year's second major.

The Northern Irishman, already a two-time PGA champion (2012 and 2014), cut short his practice round after just three holes. This follows a visibly uncomfortable performance at last week's Truist Championship, where he was seen limping around Quail Hollow. For a player of McIlroy's caliber, known for his explosive power and precision, even a minor physical issue can be a game-changer.

Golf Channel analyst Rex Hoggard, speaking on the Golf Channel Podcast with Rex & Lav, shared his growing concern: "My level of concern is marginally higher than it was on Wednesday. Back then, after hearing him talk about it at Quail Hollow, I was dismissive. But now it's back-to-back days. He took his shoe off during the practice round, hobbling around, trying to find a shoe that would make it comfortable."

While Hoggard believes the blister won't affect McIlroy's swing mechanics, the real challenge lies in the course itself. Aronimink is a demanding walk with rolling hills, and for a player who thrives on rhythm and focus, any distraction can be costly. "This is a difficult walking golf course," Hoggard noted. "Anything that takes away your focus or keeps you from preparing the way you want is a drawback at this level."

Despite the setback, McIlroy remains a formidable contender. The course conditions—soft and receptive—play right into his strengths. As Justin Rose's caddie once observed, Aronimink is "perfect for Rory." He loves a soft course where he can unleash his signature power off the tee, giving him a clear advantage when he finds the fairway.

However, Hoggard made a telling adjustment to his pre-tournament picks: "I slipped him behind Scottie Scheffler, and the only reason is the toe. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's a tough walk, and any distraction is a drawback."

For McIlroy, who has already etched his name into golf history with two PGA Championships and a career Grand Slam in sight, this minor injury is a test of resilience. Can he overcome the discomfort and focus on what he does best? As the first tee approaches, all eyes will be on that toe—and whether it can carry him to another major triumph.
