The Zurich Classic wasn't the only event this week with a unique format. The PGA Tour Champions played the 2026 Mitsubishi Electric Classic at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Georgia, using Modified Stableford Scoring.
Points are earned (or lost) for albatross (8 points), eagle (5), birdie (2), par (0), bogey (minus 1) and double bogey or worse (minus 3). After 54 holes, the golfer with the most points is the winner. Yes, high numbers are good at this event.
Zach Johnson, who won on the Champions tour his first time out earlier this season, led after both the first and second rounds. He tallied 15 points on Friday and 13 more on Saturday and started the final round three points ahead of Retief Goosen. Johnson was seeking his second Champions win in his fifth start but he could only manage eight points in the final round, which slid him back to a third-place finish.
Meanwhile, Goosen put together a 14-point final round. He improved his scoring by one point each day, as he had 12 on Friday and 13 on Saturday. His 39-point total was good for a two-point win over Stephen Ames. Stewart Cink was fourth at 35 points and Thongchai Jaidee was fifth with 33 points.
Goosen had eight birdies on Sunday (to go along with a pair of bogeys), including a 4 on the par-5 closing hole. He had three in a row on Nos. 2 through 4 after starting with a bogey.
Goosen now has five PGA Tour Champions wins and also has a win in three straight seasons. The Mitsubishi win is his fourth top-20 finish in six events in 2026 and third top 10.
