Jon Sumrall admittedly was frazzled during his first month as Florida’s coach.

Jon Sumrall's first month as the head coach of the Florida Gators was a whirlwind. Juggling Tulane's College Football Playoff run, recruiting, assembling a new staff, and navigating the transfer portal was a monumental task unlike any he'd faced. Amidst this chaos, one critical mission emerged: retaining key talent from the previous regime.

That mission was a resounding success. Sumrall secured the return of five potential plug-and-play starters: running back Jadan Baugh, receivers Vernell Brown III and Dallas Wilson, linebacker Myles Graham, and edge rusher Jayden Woods. This core group, representing a $5.2 million investment for 2026, provides a vital foundation for Sumrall's debut season and the program's quest to climb out of a five-year slump.

"I’m grateful those guys stayed," Sumrall said. "Those guys give us a shot to have success." Their retention wasn't always a given, requiring significant personal effort from the new coach.

Take Jadan Baugh, the 1,170-yard rusher. He considered following his position coach to Texas, but Sumrall made a powerful impression during a Christmas Eve in-home visit—a trip made just days after his father's passing and Tulane's playoff loss. Bringing his entire family, Sumrall's personal touch resonated deeply. "For him to bring his family... that shows that you really, really care about your players," Baugh noted.

As the Gators prepare for their annual spring game at The Swamp, all eyes will understandably be on the quarterback battle between Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. However, the true bedrock of this new era may well be the five established stars Sumrall fought to keep in Gainesville, setting a crucial tone for the rebuild ahead.
