The NBA rumor mill is heating up, and one of the biggest potential storylines of the offseason could involve a superstar changing teams. The Houston Rockets are reportedly eyeing Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell as a prime trade target, and for good reason.
Mitchell, a four-time All-Star, is entering a critical juncture of his career. He becomes eligible for a contract extension this summer, and if he doesn't sign one, the Cavaliers could be forced to consider trading him before he hits free agency in 2027. The clock is ticking, and the stakes are high.
After a disappointing start to their second-round playoff series against the Detroit Pistons—trailing 2-0 after Game 2—Cleveland is staring down another early postseason exit. If the Cavs can't turn things around, the front office may decide it's time to shake things up. And if Mitchell isn't committed to a long-term future in Cleveland, the Rockets are ready to pounce.
Houston has been quietly building a treasure chest of assets. According to ESPN's Tim MacMahon, the Rockets are "loaded" with future draft picks, including the Phoenix Suns' 2027 and 2029 first-rounders, the Dallas Mavericks' 2029 pick, and a 2027 pick swap with the Brooklyn Nets. They also control their own picks moving forward. In other words, they have the ammunition to win any bidding war.
"If they want to make a blockbuster trade... and we'll see what happens with the Cavaliers. If Donovan Mitchell's available, that is a guy I could see the Rockets being aggressive to go get," MacMahon said. He added that Houston would likely be less interested in older stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, but a "20-something star" like Mitchell fits their timeline perfectly.
Yahoo! Sports' Kelly Iko has also reported that Mitchell could be a target for the Rockets, who are looking to accelerate their rebuild after years of lottery finishes. Pairing Mitchell with young core pieces like Jalen Green, Alperen Şengün, and Jabari Smith Jr. could instantly make Houston a playoff contender in the loaded Western Conference.
For now, all eyes are on Cleveland's playoff run. But if the Cavs stumble again, don't be surprised if the Rockets come calling with an offer that's hard to refuse.
