Eintracht Frankfurt's troubles are piling up—and it's not just their shaky form on the pitch that's causing concern. Behind the scenes, a reported rift between head coach Albert Riera and star striker Jonathan Burkardt is threatening to unsettle the squad.

According to German outlet Bild, tensions have been simmering for some time. Riera, who took the reins about three months ago, allegedly took issue with Burkardt's fitness data—specifically, what he considered a high body fat percentage. Rather than addressing the striker directly, Riera reportedly tasked assistant coach Jan Fießer with delivering a "clear message" to the 25-year-old.

That approach backfired. Burkardt, who believes he's in peak physical condition, felt the criticism was overblown and would have preferred a straightforward, one-on-one conversation with his coach. Adding to the confusion, Riera also questioned Burkardt's defensive work rate, leaving the striker frustrated and seeking clarity.

The situation escalated when Burkardt, via his agent, contacted Eintracht board member for sport Markus Krösche. Krösche then stepped in to mediate, seeking an explanation from Riera—a move that Bild reports "must have hit the Spaniard hard." The coach is said to have later confronted Burkardt in passing, blaming him for the uncomfortable exchange with the club chief.

This off-field drama may have influenced team selection, as Burkardt started on the bench in Frankfurt's 1-1 draw with FC Augsburg over the weekend, only entering the pitch for the final minutes. For a striker of his caliber—a key figure in the squad—that's a telling sign.

Riera's man-management style has reportedly drawn criticism from multiple players since his arrival, with some questioning his approach. For a club like Eintracht Frankfurt, known for its passionate fanbase and competitive spirit, unity is crucial—especially as they look to climb the Bundesliga table. Whether this rift can be mended remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure: the drama off the pitch is as intense as anything happening on it.
