Report: Vikings GM Candidate Says No Thanks, Turns Down Interview

The Minnesota Vikings are in the midst of a high-stakes search for their next general manager, but their latest attempt to fill the front office’s top seat has hit an unexpected roadblock. Chargers assistant general manager Chad Alexander has reportedly declined the Vikings’ request for an interview, withdrawing his name from consideration entirely.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Alexander is comfortable in Los Angeles and wants to see the Chargers’ 2026 team-building process through. It’s a reminder that in the NFL, landing a top executive is a two-way street—much like signing a star player or pulling off a blockbuster trade. The league may be full of ambitious candidates eager for a promotion, but sometimes the perfect fit just isn’t there on either side.

Think of it like free agency: the Vikings can make all the calls they want, but if the other party isn’t interested, the deal falls through. Remember the Jauan Jennings situation? Same principle applies here. Alexander’s decision isn’t a reflection on Minnesota’s franchise—it’s simply a matter of timing and personal preference.

Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper notes that Alexander is in his third year working under Chargers GM Joe Hortiz, having previously spent time with the Jets and Ravens. His roots run deep with Hortiz, and loyalty to a current project can be a powerful motivator in the front office world.

For the Vikings, the search continues. They still have a strong internal candidate in acting GM Rob Brzezinski, and have requested interviews with a deep pool of assistant GMs from around the league: Lions assistant Ray Agnew, Broncos assistant Reed Burckhardt, Dolphins assistant Kyle Smith, 49ers assistant RJ Gillen, Bills assistant Terrance Gray, Rams assistant John McKay, and Seahawks assistant. It’s a wide net, and one rejection won’t slow them down.

Sometimes the best move is knowing when to say no. For Alexander, staying put in LA feels right. For the Vikings, the next move is already in motion.
