Report: LeBron James, Lakers, have mutual interest in new contract

According to a report, LeBron James and the Lakers "have interest in continuing their partnership" next season.

The Los Angeles Lakers' 2026 playoff run may have ended, but the biggest storyline of their offseason is just heating up: Will LeBron James return to the purple and gold?

As the NBA's all-time leading scorer approaches free agency, speculation has swirled for nearly a year about a potential departure. While the Lakers can offer him more money than any other suitor, the question has always been whether both sides truly want to continue their partnership.

Now, we may have our first real answer. Just one day after the Lakers' 115-110 Western Conference semifinals loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, The Athletic reported that both James and the organization "have interest in continuing their partnership." According to team and league sources, Lakers brass—including Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss—have repeatedly expressed hope that James finishes his career in Los Angeles.

But it won't be simple. The Lakers face a delicate balancing act this summer, with key free agents like rising star Austin Reaves also needing new deals. James, who turns 41 next season, earned $52.6 million this year and would likely need to take a pay cut to stay—or to sign anywhere else, for that matter.

The Lakers are projected to have roughly $50 million in salary cap space, but they're expected to target outside help to address roster weaknesses. Meanwhile, teams like Golden State and Cleveland are reportedly ready to make a play for the four-time MVP if they sense any hesitation from Los Angeles.

During the regular season, James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game—proving he still has plenty left in the tank. Whether that tank stays in Lakerland remains the defining question of the NBA offseason.
