The Los Angeles Lakers are making it crystal clear: their future is built around Luka Dončić. And they aren't messing around.
Just weeks ago, the Lakers looked like a legitimate championship contender, winning 16 of 18 games before Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves went down with significant injuries on April 2. But their playoff run came to a harsh reality check in the second round against the Oklahoma City Thunder, exposing roster flaws that need urgent fixing.
Now, according to a report from The Athletic's Dan Woike and Sam Amick, the Lakers have a specific blueprint in mind—one that mirrors the balanced roster Dončić led to the NBA Finals in 2024 with the Dallas Mavericks.
"The promises made to Dončić and his representatives before he signed an extension with the Lakers weren't to have one good month," the report states. "Those promises were to give him a locker room full of his type of players, to find him replicants, if not improvements, of the balanced roster he made a finals run with."
So what does that look like? The Lakers are targeting three key upgrades:
1. A true lob threat at center. Think Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II—but with cleaner injury histories. Dončić thrives with a rim-running big who can catch everything above the rim.
2. Two-way wings. The Lakers want athletic, defensive-minded players who can also knock down outside shots. Versatility is the name of the game.
3. A long-term secondary playmaker. Austin Reaves could be that guy, but only if he agrees to a team-friendly contract. His defensive limitations and lack of elite athleticism are concerns, but his offensive creativity fits well alongside Dončić.
The Lakers also plan to re-sign LeBron James and Austin Reaves this summer, but the message is clear: this roster is being built for and around Luka Dončić. As one league source put it: "The Lakers are on the clock."
For Lakers fans, the offseason just got a whole lot more interesting.
