Report: John Holecek returning as Loyola Academy (IL) football coach

Big news is breaking in the Illinois high school football world, and it centers on one of the state's most legendary programs. According to a report from WGN's Mike Lowe, John Holecek is returning to the sidelines as the head football coach of Loyola Academy.

This is a monumental move for the Ramblers. Holecek isn't just any coach; he is the architect of the most successful era in Loyola football history. From 2006 to 2022, he built a powerhouse, compiling a staggering 185-35 record, capturing three state championships and nine Chicago Catholic League titles. His return signals a clear intent to restore the program to its championship pedigree.

The timing of his comeback is particularly telling. After Holecek's departure in 2022, Loyola remained strong for two seasons, going an impressive 26-2. However, the 2025 campaign saw the Ramblers stumble to a 4-5 record—their first losing season since 2005, the year before Holecek originally took over. The struggle to maintain those hallmark double-digit win seasons highlighted just how much his leadership was missed.

With Holecek back at the helm, the future looks bright in Wilmette. The Ramblers boast a talented core ready to rebound, including 2028 three-star tight end Jordan McKinley, linebacker Jack Stanton, and quarterback Matthew Lee. This infusion of established talent with proven leadership creates a recipe for a swift return to contention.

In a corresponding move, Beau Desherow will assume the role of general manager/assistant coach, adding another layer of football expertise to the staff. The combination of Holecek's championship experience and a promising roster has Rambler fans eagerly anticipating a return to the top of the Illinois high school football ranks, where they finished as the state's No. 8 team in the final 2025 Massey Rankings despite their record.
