The Iowa Hawkeyes football program is facing significant NCAA sanctions, with reports confirming the team will be forced to vacate nine wins due to recruiting violations tied to the acquisition of quarterback Cade McNamara.

The NCAA found that Iowa made impermissible contact with McNamara via texts and phone calls before he officially entered the transfer portal in 2022. Assistant coach Jon Budmayr and head coach Kirk Ferentz reportedly assured the quarterback he had a spot with the Hawkeyes, constituting a violation of tampering rules.

As a result, Iowa must vacate all nine victories from the 13 games McNamara appeared in during his tenure, which saw the team go 9-4 with him under center. The penalties also include a $25,000 fine and future recruiting restrictions for the program.

In a statement, the NCAA panel acknowledged that Iowa and Ferentz took responsibility for the violations, noting, "When respected individuals identify their mistakes and take responsibility for them, it sets the standard for appropriate behavior within their programs."

The vacated wins have a notable impact on the record books, particularly for the legendary Coach Ferentz. Subtracting these nine victories drops his Big Ten career win total from 213 back to 204, meaning he will once again need to chase down the conference's all-time wins record, currently held by Woody Hayes.
