Netflix's first foray into MMA is going old school with a highly anticipated main event – and so is the CSAC's choice for referee.

Netflix is stepping into the MMA arena for the first time, and they're doing it with a heavyweight throwback: the long-awaited dream fight between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano. And if the main event is going old school, so is the California State Athletic Commission's pick for referee.

According to a list of officials obtained by MMA Junkie, legendary referee "Big" John McCarthy will be the third man in the cage for the Rousey vs. Carano headliner at MVP MMA 1. McCarthy, whose officiating career dates all the way back to UFC 2 in 1994, stepped away from refereeing in 2018 to work as a broadcaster for Bellator and PFL. But last October, he announced his return—and now he's back for one of the most anticipated bouts of the year.

The judges scoring the Rousey-Carano fight will be Derek Cleary, Michael Bell, and Felicia Oh.

Meanwhile, the co-main event between Mike Perry and Nate Diaz will be refereed by veteran official Mike Beltran, with judges Chris Leben, Marcel Varela, and Raphael Davis on the cards. For the third marquee matchup of the night—Francis Ngannou vs. Philipe Lins—Herb Dean will serve as referee, while Ron McCarthy, Jonathan Romero, and Chris Crail will handle the scoring.

This historic event marks the first MMA card promoted by Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions and the first to be streamed live on Netflix. Rousey has already set her sights on history, saying she hopes her comeback against Carano becomes the most-viewed MMA fight ever, surpassing the estimated 8.8 million viewers who tuned in for Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez on FOX back in 2011.
