The Cincinnati Reds are making a bold move to shore up their struggling bullpen, calling up veteran right-hander Tejay Antone more than two years after his third Tommy John surgery. The announcement comes on the heels of a tough blow: closer Emilio Pagán suffered a hamstring injury last night, leaving a gaping hole in the relief corps. C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic broke the news Wednesday, noting that Antone will return to the big leagues 759 days after his most recent surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament.

Nicknamed "Captain Hook" for his devastating breaking ball, Antone, now 32, is a much different pitcher than the one who last took a major league mound. Back then, he could touch 100 mph with his fastball, pairing it with a wipeout curve that made him a fan favorite. But after three elbow reconstructions, he's reinvented his arsenal—and it's working. In 12 appearances at Triple-A this season, he's posted a sharp 2.25 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and an impressive 15-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio. That kind of command suggests he's ready to contribute immediately.

The Reds now face a roster crunch: Antone wasn't on the 40-man roster, so a corresponding move is coming. Pagán could head to the 60-day injured list, signaling the severity of his hamstring strain, or the team might designate someone else for assignment. Catcher PJ Higgins is a potential candidate if they go that route.

Manager Terry Francona will have some intriguing decisions to make as he reshapes the bullpen. Antone's return adds a veteran presence with high-upside stuff, but the team needs to stop the bleeding. The Reds are riding a five-game losing streak, capped by back-to-back walk-off losses, and they'll look to turn things around tonight at Wrigley Field. All eyes will be on how Antone handles the pressure—and whether his comeback story can spark a much-needed turnaround.
