The Cincinnati Reds announced they signed veteran right-handed starting pitcher Chris Paddack.

The Cincinnati Reds have made a move to bolster their pitching staff, announcing the signing of veteran right-handed starter Chris Paddack to a one-year MLB contract that runs through the 2026 season. The deal was confirmed by the team on May 13, adding depth to a rotation that's seen its share of early-season challenges.

Paddack, 30, joins the Reds after being released by the Miami Marlins, where he was previously designated for assignment. He inked a one-year, $4 million deal with Miami over the offseason, but struggled to find his rhythm, posting a 7.63 ERA and 1.663 WHIP over 30 2/3 innings across seven appearances (six starts). It's a far cry from the promise he showed earlier in his career, but the Reds are betting on a fresh start in Cincinnati.

The right-hander brings a wealth of experience to the Queen City. Over 125 career MLB appearances—split between the Minnesota Twins, San Diego Padres, Detroit Tigers, and Marlins—Paddack has compiled a 32-41 record with a 4.79 ERA. Notably, he was acquired by the Tigers from the Twins at the 2025 trade deadline, showcasing his value as a reliable arm in competitive situations.

To make room on the roster, the Reds placed right-handed pitcher Rhett Lowder on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder pain, a setback for the promising young arm. Additionally, catcher PJ Higgins was designated for assignment, clearing a spot for the newly signed veteran.

For Reds fans, this signing signals the team's commitment to shoring up its pitching depth as the season heats up. Paddack's journey from a promising rookie with the Padres to a seasoned veteran has been marked by ups and downs, but his experience could prove invaluable in a clubhouse looking to make a push. Whether he can rediscover his form in Cincinnati remains to be seen, but the move adds an intriguing layer to the Reds' 2026 campaign.
