It’s been a rough stretch for Cincinnati Reds fans—and nobody feels it more than the team’s own broadcaster. Play-by-play announcer John Sadak didn’t hold back after the Reds’ latest loss, calling the team’s performance “embarrassing.”
After a promising start to the season, the Redlegs have hit a wall. An eight-game losing streak has dropped their record to 20-19, putting them dead last in a fierce NL Central race. But it’s not just the losses that sting—it’s how they’re losing.
The Reds currently own the second-worst run differential in all of Major League Baseball. That ugly stat was on full display Friday night, when they suffered a 10-0 shutout at the hands of the Houston Astros. Things got so bad that catcher Jose Trevino took the mound in the ninth inning—his fourth pitching appearance of the season already. When Trevino gave up a base hit that drove in Houston’s 10th run, Sadak’s frustration boiled over into a single, pointed word: “Embarrassing.”
This wasn’t an isolated outburst. Just a day earlier, the Reds made a defensive gaffe against the Chicago Cubs, failing to realize there was no force play at the plate and allowing Ian Happ to score easily. Analyst Chris Welsh called it a “middle school mistake.” And before that, Cincinnati dropped three straight to the Cubs in walk-off fashion.
The silver lining? It’s only early May, and there’s plenty of season left to turn things around. The Reds showed they can compete in April, and that form isn’t gone for good. But the flip side is that there’s also plenty of time for more painful defeats to pile up. For now, Reds fans—and their broadcaster—are left hoping the embarrassment sparks a turnaround.
