In a season already riddled with pitching injuries, the Cincinnati Reds finally caught a break—and it came in the form of a line drive right to the foot.
Veteran right-hander Brady Singer took a hard comebacker just below his right ankle during Tuesday night's start, forcing him out of the game early. But after a promising recovery overnight, Singer confirmed he expects to take the mound for his next scheduled start on Sunday in Cleveland.
"When I woke up it was a little sore, but now it's looser," Singer said after completing a full pregame workout Wednesday. "The swelling was the biggest concern, but we got a lot of it out last night. It feels a lot better today."
The positive prognosis is a major relief for a Reds rotation that's already stretched thin. With three key starters currently on the injured list and top prospect Chase Petty battling a blister issue, Cincinnati recently signed veteran Chris Paddack—fresh off his release from the Marlins—to join the rotation on Saturday.
Manager Terry Francona echoed the cautious optimism surrounding Singer's status. "We'll obviously keep an eye on him as we progress," Francona said. "I think there was some expectation he might come in a little worse. We're hopeful."
For a team that's been navigating a minefield of arm troubles, dodging a foot injury bullet might be the best news they've had all month.
