Redesigned Shore golf course holes drawing raves: 'Love the aesthetics'

The course history before Knob Hill’s opened in 1998 remains sketchy; speculation and searches date it to post-WWII golfing boom of the 1950s & 60s.

Just a few miles from the historic site of the Battle of Monmouth, Knob Hill Golf Club in Manalapan is quietly earning a reputation as one of the Shore's most delightful surprises. This rolling, par-70 course stretches 6,408 yards and offers a rare blend of private-club quality with public access—making it a true hidden gem among New Jersey's celebrated golf landscape.

The course's history before Knob Hill opened in 1998 is a bit of a mystery, with speculation dating its origins back to the post-World War II golf boom of the 1950s and '60s. But what's clear today is that this semi-private club has carved out its own niche by welcoming both members and daily-fee players throughout the week, standing tall alongside the area's most prestigious private and nationally acclaimed public courses.

This season, the club has turned heads with a thoughtful redesign of holes No. 16 and No. 17. These two new-look challenges aren't just about tougher shots—they're about enhancing the entire golf experience. Director of Golf Lou Kubisa explains the vision: "We're always looking for ways to reinvest in and elevate the course. With fees rising everywhere, this is our way of showing that we're committed to our members and the public golfers who play here. That's our niche. We manage the experience and conditions for everyone, and we're thrilled with how everything turned out."

The redesign focused on creating more playable space on the 16th hole while keeping golfers' attention squarely on the game, away from distractions beyond the property lines. That led to changes on the 17th green as well, making both holes feel more isolated and immersive—a welcome shift for anyone who's ever been pulled out of their rhythm by outside activity.

Members got their first taste of the new holes on May 2, and the response has been nothing short of enthusiastic. "I love it! I parred them both," said Gene Maresca, a long-time member from Colts Neck. "It took a little longer than expected with the rough winter, but everything came out great." Len Bellezza, a member from Plainsboro, echoed the sentiment: "I didn't play them very well today, but I love the aesthetics of both. On 16, there used to be a lot of trees up the right side, and the wind always blows left to right there, so most people would slice into them. Now the trees are gone, and it plays much longer—and better."

Whether you're chasing a personal best or simply soaking in the Shore's golf charm, Knob Hill's redesigned holes are proof that smart course improvements can elevate everyone's game. And with that kind of commitment to quality, it's a course worth adding to your rotation this season.
