For Detroit Red Wings fans, nothing gets the blood pumping quite like watching the next generation of talent take shape. And right now, the pipeline is flowing with prospects at every stage of their journey—from established standouts to fresh faces just learning the ropes of professional hockey.
Take the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit's AHL affiliate. You've got forwards like Carter Mazur and defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka, who've already logged significant time in the NHL. Then there's William Wallinder, a blue-liner knocking on the door of the big league. And finally, you have goalie Trey Augustine—who's just beginning his pro career after signing with the Red Wings out of Michigan State.
For Augustine, hockey is no longer just a game. It's a job. And he's embracing the lifestyle shift that comes with it.
"I finished my school for the semester last week, so really, feeling it now," Augustine said. "Just being able to find things to do away from the rink, take care of my body, and get ready to go for tomorrow. It is a job, and I need to be ready to go every single day."
The transition from college hockey to the pros is no small feat. Augustine admits the schedule alone has been an adjustment. "I was just kind of getting my feet wet here. It's been pretty different than the college schedule, so just getting used to it. It can only help me next year."
Right now, Augustine is the third-string goalie on the Griffins roster as they battle through the Calder Cup playoffs. But he's not just sitting on the bench—he's watching, listening, and learning from every rep and every moment.
"It's been great," Augustine said. "The guys have made it super easy for me. Just being able to kind of fit right in."
Drafted in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft, Augustine has spent his entire hockey career in Michigan. Now, he's just one stop away from his ultimate destination: wearing the Winged Wheel in Detroit. For a kid who grew up a Red Wings fan, that dream is closer than ever.
Whether you're a prospect climbing the ranks or a fan cheering them on, one thing's for sure—the future of the Red Wings is in good hands. And with the right gear and mindset, every player can make that leap from dream to reality.
