Detroit Red Wings fans have a new reason to cheer this spring. Defenseman Justin Faulk, who joined the team in a blockbuster March trade from the St. Louis Blues, has been named captain of Team USA for the 2026 World Championships.
Faulk made an immediate impact after the trade, scoring five goals in just 17 games with the Red Wings and stabilizing the blue line. While Detroit missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the fifth straight season, Faulk's season isn't over yet—he's now set to lead his country on the international stage.
Joining him as alternate captains are Seattle Kraken defenseman Ryan Lindgren and Columbus Blue Jackets forward Mathieu Olivier. Faulk is no stranger to the World Championships, having already suited up for Team USA 28 times, recording four goals and 13 assists in his international career.
He won't be the only Red Wings representative on the roster. Max Plante, Detroit's second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and winner of the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, will also wear the red, white, and blue.
Faulk's season was a strong one overall. Split between St. Louis and Detroit, he appeared in 78 games, racking up 16 goals and 24 assists while averaging exactly 22 minutes of ice time per night—a testament to his reliability and two-way game.
The tournament kicks off May 15 and runs through May 31 in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland. For Faulk, it's a chance to cap off a year of transition with a gold medal—and for Red Wings fans, a glimpse of the leadership and grit that could help turn Detroit back into a contender.
