John Gibson, 32, showed he is still one of the better goaltenders in the NHL in his first season with the Red Wings.

When the Detroit Red Wings acquired John Gibson last summer, many in the hockey world wondered if the veteran goaltender had already seen his best days. After 12 seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, injuries and a heavy workload had some questioning whether the 32-year-old could still compete at an elite level. The Ducks themselves seemed to signal a changing of the guard by trading Gibson to make room for younger netminder Lukas Dostal. But Gibson had other plans.

In his first season with the Red Wings, Gibson didn't just silence the doubters—he rewrote the narrative. Posting a 29-22-4 record with a solid 2.72 goals-against average, a .901 save percentage, and four shutouts, Gibson proved he remains one of the NHL's top goaltenders. His 57 appearances marked his busiest season since 2018-19, showing durability and resilience that many thought might be behind him.

"Maybe there was a little chip on my shoulder," Gibson admitted. "But honestly, I was just looking for a fresh start, a new opportunity. That's what I got here. I had a lot of fun playing a lot of games—that's what I wanted to do."

The season didn't exactly start with fireworks. Gibson was pulled on opening night against Montreal and struggled to find his rhythm early on. He even lost playing time to Cam Talbot, and as Thanksgiving approached, there was genuine concern about whether the Wings had made the right investment. But then came December—and everything changed.

Gibson went on an incredible 9-1-2 run that month, posting a blistering .925 save percentage. That stretch single-handedly pulled the Red Wings into the playoff conversation, reminding everyone why he was once considered one of the most dominant goalies in the league. "It was a slow start for me personally," Gibson reflected. "But after that, I got back to my game—keeping it simple, stopping the puck, and giving the team a chance to win. I felt like I was able to do that."

For a Red Wings team desperately seeking a proven No. 1 goaltender, Gibson's resurgence was exactly what the doctor ordered. Whether you're a goalie looking for inspiration or a fan appreciating a veteran's comeback story, Gibson's season is a reminder that experience and grit never go out of style—on the ice or in your gear bag.
