John Gibson, 32, showed he is still one of the better goaltenders in the NHL in his first season with the Red Wings.

When the Detroit Red Wings acquired John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks last summer, many in the hockey world wondered if the veteran goaltender had lost a step. After 12 seasons in Anaheim, injuries and a heavy workload had some questioning whether the 32-year-old was past his prime. The Ducks' decision to trade him in favor of younger netminder Lukas Dostal only fueled those doubts.

But Gibson has spent the 2023-24 season silencing his critics in style. Posting a solid 29-22-4 record with a 2.72 goals-against average, .901 save percentage, and four shutouts, he proved he's still one of the NHL's elite goaltenders. His 57 games played marked his busiest season since 2018-19, showing durability that answered any lingering questions about his health.

"Maybe there was a little chip on my shoulder," Gibson admitted. "But honestly, I was just looking for a fresh start and a new opportunity. I got that here in Detroit, and I've had a lot of fun. The last few weeks weren't what we hoped for, but overall, this is a great group of guys. Playing a lot of games was exactly what I wanted."

The season didn't begin smoothly for Gibson. After getting pulled on opening night against Montreal, he struggled to find his rhythm and even lost playing time to Cam Talbot. Through Thanksgiving, there was genuine concern about his performance.

Then came December, and everything changed. Gibson caught fire with a remarkable 9-1-2 run, posting a blistering .925 save percentage that single-handedly pulled the Red Wings into playoff contention.

"It was a slow start for me personally," Gibson reflected. "But after that, I got back to my game. I just try to keep it simple—stop the puck and give the team a chance to win. I felt like I was able to do that consistently."

For a Red Wings team that had been searching for a proven No. 1 goaltender, Gibson delivered exactly what they needed. Whether you're a goalie looking to channel that competitive fire or a fan appreciating a veteran's resurgence, Gibson's season is a reminder that experience and determination can silence even the loudest doubters.
