The Boston Red Sox are shaking up their roster ahead of Wednesday's series finale against the Detroit Tigers, bringing a veteran arm back into the rotation while sending a promising rookie back to the minors after a memorable debut.

Right-hander Sonny Gray has been activated from the 15-day injured list and will take the mound at Comerica Park. The 36-year-old landed on the IL on April 21 after suffering a minor hamstring strain during his Patriots Day start against the Tigers, when he exited in the third inning. Gray didn't require a rehab assignment, instead throwing a three-inning simulated game at Fenway Park on Friday to prove he was ready. In five starts this season, he carries a 4.30 ERA, but had allowed just one earned run and three hits to Detroit before the injury cut his outing short.

To make room for Gray, the Red Sox optioned left-handed rookie Alec Gamboa to Triple-A Worcester. Gamboa, a 29-year-old former Dodgers farmhand who spent part of last season in Korea, made his major league debut late in Tuesday's 10-3 win. He delivered a perfect ninth inning, needing just 14 pitches to retire the side while striking out Zach McKinstry and Hao-Yu Lee. It was a brief but bright moment for the newcomer, who joined the team Monday when veteran Danny Coulombe hit the IL with neck spasms.

The Red Sox are also monitoring other injury concerns. The team is hopeful that Ranger Suarez (hamstring) and Roman Anthony (wrist) can avoid the injured list after leaving games earlier this week, which could delay any further roster moves.

For now, all eyes are on Gray as he looks to stabilize a rotation that's been navigating early-season bumps. A strong outing against the Tigers would be a welcome sight for Boston fans—and a reminder of why the veteran was brought in to lead this staff.
