It's been a turbulent season for the Boston Red Sox, and with the MLB trade deadline still three months away, some bold predictions are already surfacing. Between key injuries, the unexpected firing of manager Alex Cora, and growing concerns about clubhouse chemistry, the team's outlook has taken a serious hit. That has led FanSided's Cody Williams to suggest a move that might raise some eyebrows: trading away one of the few bright spots in Boston's lineup.
"It's not at all hyperbolic to say that Willson Contreras has been the only consistently effective offensive force for the Red Sox," Williams wrote. "And while it might sound crazy, just 33 games into the season, to suggest trading away the one veteran offensive piece that's working for this lineup right now on a day-to-day basis, that's what we have to prepare ourselves for with how things are trending."
Contreras, a three-time All-Star, has been the engine of Boston's offense. Through the early part of the season, he leads the team with seven home runs and an impressive .879 OPS. No other Red Sox hitter has more than four homers—Wilyer Abreu is the next closest—underscoring how reliant the lineup has been on the veteran catcher's production.
Signed through the 2027 season with a club option for 2028, Contreras could become a valuable trade chip if Boston decides to pivot toward rebuilding. "He could net the Red Sox potential future starters," Williams noted, "and should things sour further with this team, then at least exploring what could be had for Contreras is well worthwhile."
For a team in need of a quick turnaround, the idea of moving a proven star might seem counterintuitive. But in a season already marked by instability, the Red Sox may have to consider every option—even the ones that sound a little crazy.
