In a classic display of small-ball power, the Boston Red Sox proved that sometimes just a couple of big swings are all you need. Friday night's 2-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays wasn't just another win—it was a statement. The Red Sox improved to 17-22 while handing the Rays (25-13) their first division loss of the season. Tampa had been a perfect 7-0 against AL East foes before running into Boston's buzzsaw.
The box score might not jump off the page—Boston managed just four hits total—but two of those hits traveled a combined 806 feet. Wilyer Abreu got the party started in the third inning, crushing a 1-2 slider 427 feet to right-center field for his sixth home run of the season. The rookie has been on an absolute tear, going 19-for-57 (.333) with three homers and two doubles over his last 12 games.
Not to be outdone, Ceddanne Rafaela followed suit in the fourth inning, launching a 379-foot solo shot to left field for his third homer of the year. Rafaela has been equally impressive, hitting .333 (16-for-48) with two homers, two triples, and a double in his last dozen games.
But the real story of the night was rookie starter Connelly Early. The young left-hander delivered the longest start of his professional career, tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and one walk, striking out eight. His previous career high was 6⅔ innings against Baltimore on April 26. Early showed his mettle in the third inning when he escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam, striking out Ryan Vilade before inducing a 5-4-3 double play from Junior Caminero.
The bullpen continued Boston's dominant pitching trend. Garrett Whitlock worked a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts, and Aroldis Chapman slammed the door in the ninth for his eighth save in as many opportunities. Chapman has now converted 23 consecutive save chances, showing why he remains one of the game's most reliable closers.
This win marked Boston's MLB-leading sixth shutout of the season, and the team has now won four of its last five games. The Red Sox and Rays return to action Saturday at 4:10 p.m. for the third game of this four-game series, with Boston sending rookie left-hander Payton Tolle (1-1, 2.04 ERA) to the mound against Rays righty Nick Martinez.
