The Boston Red Sox are shaking things up behind the plate this Saturday as they prepare to face the Tampa Bay Rays—weather permitting, of course. With heavy rain threatening the 4:10 p.m. ET start at Fenway Park, the team is ready to roll out a new lineup featuring recently called-up catcher Mickey Gasper.

Gasper, promoted from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday to replace the injured Roman Anthony (out with a wrist sprain), will start behind the dish and bat sixth. He'll be catching left-handed pitcher Payton Tolle, a familiar battery mate from their time together with the WooSox. Interim manager Chad Tracy noted that Gasper's familiarity with Tolle's arsenal and usage was a key factor in the decision, alongside his left-handed bat against Rays right-hander Nick Martinez.

"He knows Tolle. He's caught him two or three times down in Worcester," Tracy explained. "I watched him do it, and he knows how to handle him. And the left-handed bat is a very, very quality at-bat from the left side."

Gasper has been red-hot in the minors, hitting .296 with six home runs and a .947 OPS in 28 games for Worcester. However, his big-league debut in 2024 was less stellar—he went 0-for-18 before being traded to the Twins and later re-acquired by Boston on waivers this spring. Now, he's getting a second chance to prove himself.

Both Carlos Narváez and Connor Wong are healthy and available off the bench, but Tracy opted for Gasper's specific skill set against Martinez, who enters with a sharp 1.71 ERA. The Red Sox have been on a roll, winning four of their last five games, and will look to keep that momentum going despite the uncertain forecast.

"I've heard anything from 'It's gonna be off-and-on rain' to starting around game time and raining all night," Tracy said of the weather. "Everything I've heard means we haven't heard much yet. We're just preparing to play and figure it out closer to game time."

In the outfield, Jarren Duran shifts to left field, while Masataka Yoshida holds down the cleanup spot as the team adjusts without Anthony. With a tough matchup ahead, the Red Sox are banking on Gasper's fresh energy and lefty swing to make a difference—if the skies cooperate.
