When Terry Francona heard the news that Alex Cora had been fired by the Boston Red Sox, his first reaction was pure disbelief. "My first thought was it wasn't true... I was stunned that it happened," Francona recently revealed on Buster Olney's podcast. The future Hall of Fame manager, who now leads the Cincinnati Reds, knows all too well the unique pressures of the Boston dugout.
Francona and Cora share a rare bond in Red Sox history—both have been shown the door in dramatic fashion. Francona was let go after Boston's infamous September collapse in 2011, while Cora's firing came amid a historically brutal start to the season. What caught Francona off guard wasn't just the decision itself, but the timing. "What made it more stunning, I thought, was the timing of everything and replacing five guys on a Major League staff. That's hard to do," he explained.
The veteran skipper also touched on the relentless pressure cooker that is managing in Boston. "Boston's a place where somebody has to be at fault," Francona said, noting how the city's passionate fanbase creates a different atmosphere compared to markets like Cleveland or Cincinnati. "There's so much passion."
Despite the abrupt ending, Francona had nothing but praise for his former player. "He's sharp. He's energetic," Francona said of Cora. "To do well up there, you'd better be ahead of the game, and you have to have a ton of energy, and he had all of that. He didn't miss anything during the game... He sees it really well. And if he wants to continue to do this, my guess is he'll be good for a long time."
Whether Cora returns to a dugout or takes a different path, one thing is clear: his next team will be getting a manager who has the respect of one of the game's all-time greats. For now, Red Sox fans and baseball observers alike are left wondering what could have been—and what comes next for both the franchise and the man who once led them to a World Series title.
