The Boston Red Sox are facing a familiar problem: their offense is sputtering. As one of the worst lineups in baseball, the team needs a spark—and a potential trade with the San Francisco Giants might be the answer.

Last season, these two clubs struck a deal involving an infielder. Now, with the trade deadline approaching, history could repeat itself. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden recently highlighted four names for Boston to consider, and Giants third baseman Matt Chapman stands out as a prime target.

“The Red Sox need a third baseman,” Bowden wrote. “The Astros (Carlos Correa, Isaac Paredes), Twins (Royce Lewis) and Giants (Matt Chapman) could make sense as possible trade partners. The Sox have enough in their farm system to make a deal work.” He added that without adding a bat, Boston may lack the firepower to compete for the division title.

Chapman, a five-time Gold Glove Award winner, is having a solid season at the plate, slashing .246/.324/.331 with one home run, 12 RBIs, and 14 walks in 34 games. While those numbers aren’t eye-popping, a move to Fenway Park—a much more hitter-friendly venue than Oracle Park—could unlock his full potential. His elite defense at the hot corner would also shore up a struggling infield.

For a Red Sox team looking to turn things around, a call to San Francisco might be the first step toward solving their infield woes. If the Giants are listening, Chapman could be the veteran presence Boston needs.
