A Red Sox fan’s romantic proposal at Fenway Park over the weekend quickly turned into an awkward moment that’s now going viral for all the wrong reasons.
During the fifth inning of Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros, a fan named Douglas took to the jumbotron to pop the question to his girlfriend, Sereh Linn. But instead of a joyful "yes," the stadium was met with a hesitant response. Social media footage suggests Sereh replied with "I don’t know," leaving fans in the stands and viewers at home cringing.
Linda Pizzuti Henry, CEO of the Boston Globe and wife of Red Sox owner John W. Henry, captured the moment on her Instagram Story, captioning it: "Quieter reaction on this one ... .. Congratulations Sereh and Douglas." The jumbotron graphic read, "Sereh Linn, will you marry me?" as the couple exchanged a few words before Douglas leaned in for a kiss, which Sereh obliged—though neither seemed to celebrate much afterward.
It was already a tough weekend for Red Sox fans, with the team falling to 13-21 on the season. The awkward proposal only added to the frustration. One fan on X, who claimed to be at the game, said, "I was there as well. It was very uncomfortable." Another added, "Oh nooooooo…. They were definitely not on the same page."
Social media had plenty to say, with one user joking, "I wouldn’t want to get proposed to while being surrounded by a dumpster fire either." While the Red Sox may be struggling on the field, this proposal is reminding everyone that even the best-laid plans can unravel in the ballpark spotlight.
