Bello has had a very rocky 2026 season. Now, it seems Boston is at the end of their rope with him.

The Boston Red Sox rotation is hitting a critical juncture, and all eyes are on Brayan Bello. Once a reliable arm for the team, the right-hander is now facing the most challenging stretch of his career. After a disastrous start to the 2026 season, the Red Sox have decided to shake things up by deploying an opener strategy for his next outing against the Detroit Tigers.

Bello will technically be listed as the starter, but he won't take the mound for the first inning. Instead, reliever Jovani Moran will handle the opening frame, with the hope of setting a positive tone before Bello enters the game. "Right now, it's anything we can do to get him going and get him to be Brayan Bello again, we're gonna try," interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters.

The numbers tell a sobering story. Bello currently holds a 1-4 record with a staggering 9.12 ERA, 17 strikeouts, and a 2.260 WHIP over 25 innings. To put that in perspective, last season he posted an impressive 11-9 record with a 3.35 ERA and 124 strikeouts. The drop-off has been so severe that Bello leads all of Major League Baseball in earned runs allowed — and if he had enough innings to qualify, he'd statistically be the worst pitcher in the game.

This is a far cry from the pitcher who looked like a building block for Boston's future. The team is now hoping that the opener approach can help Bello regain his confidence, which has taken a noticeable hit. Moran, who will serve as the opener, has been effective this season with a 2.33 ERA and 17 strikeouts over 19 innings. The plan is for him to pitch one or two clean innings before handing the ball to Bello, allowing the struggling starter to build momentum from a positive start.

If this strategy doesn't work and Bello struggles again, the Red Sox still have a safety net. With two minor league options remaining on his contract, a trip to Triple-A could be the next step. While it might feel like a demotion, facing lower-level competition could be exactly what Bello needs to rebuild his confidence and rediscover his form. It could also help restore his trade value, which is currently at an all-time low.

For now, the Red Sox are hoping that a fresh approach — and a clean first inning — can help turn around what has been a nightmare season for one of their most promising arms. The baseball world will be watching closely to see if Bello can seize this opportunity and begin his comeback.
